Elvish Language Question

Hi all,

I've been looking for word parts to form the Elvish word for "Redhead maiden," but I must be blind. Any Elvish scholars out there know what it would be? :)

Well, I am very much a beginner at this, but first thing I did was to
try to find out how I could call my boyfriend (a fiery dark redhead)
in Elvish and since then I call him Carfindel. As said, beginners
first try, if someone proofs me wrong, I am happy to hear the right
word, but I think the name will stick to him tho ;)

About the maiden tho I am not all sure, but thats because my
dictionary is elvish-german and I am not so sure about the true
meaning of "maiden". I know its a girl but how innocent;)?

Been digging a little myself. "Red" is "caran" (Sindarin) or "carnë"
(Quenya). The Sindarin for "head", though often applied to hills and
mountains, is "dol". Going by the mountain-name "Caradhras" from
"caran-rass" meaning "red-horn" we get "carandol" as the Sindarin for
"redhead". This could be turned into a girl's name either as "Carandoliel"
or, shorter, "Carandiel", with "-iel" being a suffix used to make girl's
names, cf. "Galadriel". You could also shorten "Carandoliel" to eg.
"Cardoliel".
The *real* expert on Elvish on these NGs, though absent now for a long
time, is David Salo. I've x-posted this to rec.arts.books.tolkien because
some Tolkien experts may read only that NG since alt.fan.tolkien has a lot
of discussion of non-Tolkien topics.

The suffix in Galadriel's name is actually '-riel', 'garlanded maiden'.
The root for 'maiden' alone would be '-wen' as in Morwen and Arwen.

Also, while 'dol' does have a 'head' meaning, in this case 'redhead' is
obviously referring to hair color and thus 'fin' (as in 'Glorfindel' -
'golden haired') might be the better root.

'Caranfinwen' would thus likely be in the right ballpark.

Doesn't 'rudh',as in Amon Rudh also mean red? What's the difference between
rudh and caran?

Amon Rudh seems to be translated like "The Bald Hill" in the index to
The Silmarillion...

So, unless "bald maiden" is intended... :-)

-iel is ofcourse also a feminine ending... e.g. Glorfinniel - the translation
of Goldilocks, Samwise's daughter.

Then again he have Hador Lorindol, who means "goldenhead"... So
obviously "dol" also works...
